TIP:  Begin purchasing U.S. Savings Bonds as a way to save for hurricane-related costs. You will not likely tap into them as easily as a savings account, but they'll earn long-term interest until you need them for an emergency.

Sandra Fontana is proud to be affiliated with the American Red Cross, as a volunteer. "Giving back to the community through the Red Cross is something any of us can do," she says. "They have opportunities for every skill level-- and for those who have little time available to assist." Fontana encourages others to call their local chapter to sign up now. "There's a small amount of paperwork required, so that interviews and background checks can be done. But, when disaster strikes, the right people can be immediately placed where they're needed," she says.
